How bariatric surgery treats Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?
Obesity is a health condition characterized by an excessive amount of body fat, usually identified by a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. BMI is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters (kg/m²).
Obesity is linked to a range of health issues including
1.Heart Disease
2.Type 2 diabetes
3.Some types of cancers
Factors contributing to obesity include:
1.Genetics
2.Environment
3.Lifestyle choices, such as diet and physical activity levels.
Tumblr media
What is OSA Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when the airway repeatedly collapses or narrows during sleep. This can cause brief periods where breathing stops completely (apnea) or becomes shallow. Disrupted oxygen flow to the brain triggers awakenings, often brief and unnoticed by the sleeper.
The symptoms of sleep apnea are as follows:
1.Loud snoring
2.Gasping or snorting during sleep
3.Excessive daytime sleepiness.
4.Disturbed Sleep
5.Sudden awakening at night

How obesity reduction through bariatric surgery can treat OSA?
Significant weight loss achieved through bariatric surgery can greatly benefit individuals dealing with sleep apnea. This procedure directly addresses the fundamental issue in obese patients — excess tissue that narrows the upper airway. As patients lose weight, these fatty deposits decrease, allowing for smoother airflow and reducing the risk of airway obstruction during sleep.
Why bariatric surgery at Laparo Obeso Centre?
The Centre, a leader in bariatric surgery in Asia, holds international certifications as a Centre of Excellence from the Surgical Review Corporation-American Board (2015) and the International Excellence Federation (IEF).

Does the Size of Subwoofer Matters
How loud and low a sub can go will depend on its size. Generally speaking, bigger subwoofers provide more bass. However, the amount of space that is available will be a crucial factor, therefore you should take measurements before choosing the required type. As a result, if you want the most powerful bass possible, you could wish to get the largest subwoofer in Dubai that will fit in the available space.
8 - inch Subwoofer:
The lowest and least expensive size is this one. One or two factory-installed systems are standard in the majority of automobiles. The fact that they fit neatly into the OEM placement makes them the easiest aftermarket upgrade. Additionally, they can be mounted underneath seats.
For individuals who aren't strictly searching for massive bass, but rather for clean and clear bass, this size offers outstanding clarity and bass response.
Pioneer TS-A2000LD2:
8" Shallow Component Dual Voice Coil Subwoofer
Tumblr media
The 8-inch subwoofer's tiny cone responds quickly and precisely to the frequencies contained in various musical genres. To ensure peak performance, a good set of door speakers are necessary for a subwoofer this size.
10-inch Subwoofer:
Because it is portable and simple to install, 10-inch is another popular size. Comparing this size subs to 8-inch subwoofers, you may hear stronger bass response. It is also the ideal size if you want a bit extra power without sacrificing sound quality or overpowering your music.
Pioneer TS-Z10LS2:
25 cm (10") Z-Series Component Subwoofer
Tumblr media
12-inch Subwoofer:
This size can accommodate a range of music, making it arguably the most adaptable. It is a typical aftermarket buy and is well-liked by audiophiles who prefer more bass. A 12-inch subwoofer can provide more bass and is compatible with a wide range of frequencies.
Pioneer TS-D12D2:
30cm (12") 2Ω Dual Coil D-Series Component Subwoofers
Tumblr media
15-inch Subwoofer:
Due to their size, 15-inch subwoofers provide the strongest and deepest bass. But they don't have the same level of precise response as their little cousins. These subs will use up a lot of your passenger or cargo room, which is why big trucks and SUVs frequently utilize them.
Pioneer TS-W1500PRO:
15" PRO Component Subwoofer
Tumblr media
A subwoofer's bass can't be duplicated by standard speakers. It is a fantastic feature that will improve your overall listening experience. Selecting the ideal style and size of car audio system in Dubai is the first step in ensuring that your vehicle has the high-quality sound you want. But ultimately, everything will need to be balanced utilizing the right speaker and amp sizes.

aespa ideal types~12/23
Tumblr media
<yoo jimin>
with moon in cancer and venus in aries, karina is a simp for capable, strong leaders
her emotional support stems from nurturing and physical comfort
and while she’s one to readily provide that for others, she needs someone who is unafraid to show her affection and take care of her no matter what
athleticism makes her want to scream
the face is the feature she notices first
cancer and aries is a sign combination that makes me think of roman armies for some reason
just thought i’d add that in there to be completely irrelevant :)
isn’t focused on material expectations at all, karina is all for the heart and soul of people
an expressive face is what she’s looking for, she wants to be able to know what her s/o is feeling
juno in aquarius means karina is destined for a caring, selfless individual
especially with venus in aries, karina’s “one” will be someone who sacrifices themselves for the greater good
which can become worrying for karina, as she needs to know that her inner circle of loved ones is protected
but she’s also incredibly on board with a heroic s/o, as long as she can be there to support them and help them- either from behind the scenes or alongside them
key words- leader, courageous, pioneer, determined, nurturing, emotional
<uchinaga aeri>
giselle’s ideal type consists of someone who is intelligent, powerful, and talented
she wants the full spectrum, the whole shebang, etc.
the scorpio and sagittarius in her chart causes her to have extremely high expectations for a person to connect with and for the connection itself
she requires complete loyalty and a focus on the bigger picture
shallow people who don’t understand the world around them/aren’t up to date with current events/are close-minded will not sit well with her
she won’t engage with them at all and will shamelessly turn them down
however, if you can prove to her that you care for not only her appearance, but also her personality
and not only her but the people around her and the rest of the world’s population
aeri needs to know that she can depend on you to stay up with her and talk about everything under the sun and stay true to your opinions
while still being respectful to her of course
physically speaking, giselle most likely feels attracted to people who have an intimidating stance, look mature and educated, but have a mischievous spirit
like karina, giselle’s destined for an original person who is true to themselves and helps the people around them achieve higher levels of self acceptance and love
growth is giselle’s biggest goal, so as long as you can do that alongside her, she’s happy to give you a chance
key words- explorer, resourceful, deep, quick-witted, open-minded, caring
<kim minjeong>
winter’s ideal person has a lot of stamina- whether emotionally, mentally, or physically
she desires strength and depth in general
and a requirement for meeting all her expectations for a relationship is definitely there
minjeong needs absolute loyalty and dedication, or she’ll move on
her love style can be confusing at times, as there’s a lot of unspoken communication and promises, but it’s also incredibly rewarding and makes you feel important
at first sight, minjeong looks for unique features
she may feel an attraction to people who are especially out of the ordinary
freckles will make her bust a phat uwu
she needs to be called special and be singled out as “your person” so she needs an affectionate person who isn’t too sappy
emotional support is a necessity
while minjeong might seem detached or uninterested at times, she still needs you there to silently have her back
someone who has similar interests to her and/or is from a group or place that she has strong ties to/is part of has a good chance of being on her radar for a potential romantic connection
she can be a bit self-sacrificial at times, albeit quietly but the tendency is still there so make sure to appreciate her and make sure that doesn’t happen too often because minjeong will start to ✨resent✨
key words- enduring, unique, supportive, committed, mature, empathic
<ning yizhuo>
we have a physical lover on our hands
hug ningning once and she might just develop a huge crush on you
but, unless you connect with her on an intellectual level, that crush will just be a common infatuation
ningning’s attracted to sensitive people
who are a bit mysterious, but still do their best to talk to others and engage in friendly conversation
emotions! are! needed!
because yizhuo can’t stand feeling cut off or detached from the people she’s in partnerships with, and needs someone who can understand her and make her feel supported
yizhuo’s cardinal mars and scorpio venus make her keen on taking care of people
so someone on the dependent side would be utterly unfathomably adorable to her
attracted to aesthetics or energies at first, as the general outlook of a person is what yizhuo notices the most
so be careful to not stay that way, and attempt to connect with her on a deeper level
because that’s what she wants, sometimes she just struggles to do that herself
wants to feel needed so bad, like someone get her someone cute and cuddly who appreciates her
but also has extreme depth (that they can handle)
key words- clingy, flexible, emotional, sensitive, an onion layered, friendly, intense

Gagosian at Frieze Los Angeles Online
July 23, 2021
Tumblr media
FRIEZE LOS ANGELES ONLINE Chris Burden
July 27–August 1, 2021 __________ Gagosian is pleased to participate in the inaugural Los Angeles edition of Frieze Viewing Room with a survey of works by Chris Burden (1946–2015). The works will be available simultaneously on the Gagosian website and in the Frieze Viewing Room, accessible at viewingroom.frieze.com. Ranging from ink-on-paper drawings to monumental site-specific sculptures, the presentation commemorates Burden’s significant career and body of work on what would have been the milestone of his seventy-fifth year. A radical figure with a fierce political consciousness, Burden possessed a unique ability to wield conceptual art as a tool for sociopolitical change. Dealing in incisive metaphors for the power dynamics of industry and institution, his work remains relevant—perhaps even more so than before—in today’s world. Burden first gained notoriety using his body as his medium. In his performance work Shoot (1971), he filmed himself being shot in the arm at close range—a searing commentary on the dangerous entanglement between media depictions of gun-toting machismo and the very real violence of the Vietnam War. He documented twenty-three of his early performances in Chris Burden Deluxe Photo Book 1971–73 (1974), a unique self-published artist’s book that adds vital commentary and context to his pioneering and often extreme performances. Burden continued to ground his works in contemporaneous issues throughout his career; his installation of thirty larger-than-life police outfits in L.A.P.D. Uniforms (1993)—one of which is included in this presentation—is a looming reminder of the persistent national crises of racial discrimination and police brutality. America’s Darker Moments (1994) restages five of the country’s twentieth-century atrocities—including the bombing of Hiroshima and the Kent State massacre—using detailed lead figurines made in the style of antique toy soldiers. By presenting these scenes in a vitrine, Burden equates the act of scrutiny with the governmental abuse of power that sparked the events he portrays. In the late 1970s, Burden began working extensively in large-scale sculpture, marrying his interests in architecture and engineering with his meditations on the strictures of the urban world. Dreamer’s Folly (2010) stands in stark contrast with the consciously aggressive aura of his early performances. Three white cast-iron ornamental gazebos—seemingly plucked from a traditional English garden—are draped with intricate lace, forming a single whimsical structure that remains rooted in history. With its exploration of the relationship between the body and public space, the work recalls Urban Light (2008), Burden’s site-specific installation of over two hundred antique streetlamps at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art that has become a landmark for the city as a whole. The Hidden Force (1995)—a little-known sculptural installation originally commissioned by the Washington State Arts Commission in 1993 for the now-demolished McNeil Island Corrections Center—will be re-created for the first time by the Burden Estate. For the original work, Burden installed three shallow circular concrete pools in a green space near the penitentiary’s cellblocks. Each pool was equipped with a floating elliptical object containing a magnet at one end, effectively creating a trio of outsize compasses that point north. Visually understated yet powerfully symbolic in its purpose and design, the work hints at the unseen forces that guide individuals toward the “right way. ”The presentation anticipates the publication of Poetic Practical: The Unrealized Work of Chris Burden, a comprehensive illustrated volume published by Gagosian that will catalogue Burden’s various unfinished works of art. Chris Burden was born in 1946 in Boston, and died in 2015 in Topanga, California. Collections include the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Instituto Inhotim, Brumadinho, Brazil; Tate, London; Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna; and 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan. Exhibitions include A Twenty-Year Survey, Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, CA (1988, traveled to Carnegie Mellon University Art Gallery, Pittsburgh; and Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, through 1989); When Robots Rule: The Two-Minute Airplane Factory, Tate Britain, London (1999); Tower of Power, Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, Vienna (2002); Beam Drop Antwerp, Middelheim Museum, Antwerp, Belgium (2009); Three Ghost Ships, Portland Art Museum, OR (2011–12); Extreme Measures, New Museum, New York (2013–14); The Master Builder, Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham, MA (2014); and Ode to Santos Dumont, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2015). _____ Chris Burden, The Hidden Force, 1995, concrete, aluminum, magnets, and water, in 3 parts, each: 36 × 108 × 108 inches (91.4 × 274.3 × 274.3 cm), installation view, McNeil Island Corrections Center, Washington (commissioned by the Washington State Arts Commission in 1993, decommissioned in 2011) © Chris Burden/Licensed by the Chris Burden Estate and Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York

Tangled Salt Marathon - One Angry Princess
Tumblr media
There’s two halves to this episode. The first is a well constructed, if over simple, mystery for the kiddos to solve. The other is a failed attempt at being ‘deep’ and ‘mature’.
Summary: Attila is finally opening up his own bakery, but people generally don't want to stop by because of his scary helmet. The next day, Monty's Sweet Shoppe is destroyed, and Attila is arrested. He is about to be banished from the kingdom, but Rapunzel makes an appeal to investigate the matter further.
The Episode is Meant to be a Homage to 12 Angry Men, but Misses the Point of the Original Film
Tumblr media
So for those who haven’t seen the movie, (though really you should) 12 Angry Men is about a jury trying to decide if an accused person is guilty of a violent crime. At first the evidence seems clear, but one lone juror refuses to vote guilty until the evidence has been gone over again. One by one he convinces the other men to vote not guilty as they each have to face they’re own personal biases.
Sound familiar?
In the show Rapunzel is the sole believer in Attila’s innocence despite evidence to the contrary. She insists on investigating herself while challenging everyone else’s personal biases.
The difference?
12 Angry Men is a hard hitting look at how privilege, prejudice, and cognitive bias can interfere with the American judicial system. None of the jurors are named, but they are all middle class, presumably Christian, white guys. And that is the point. They are all different from the accused; a young, poor, arguably non-white teen (the play is intentionally vague about the kid’s race so that you can slot any minority in there) who has a history of getting into trouble. If you were to change the ethnicity, race, gender, class, or age of any of the 12 characters then you would suddenly have a very different story. It’s their backgrounds and pre-formed opinions that inform their decisions. Even the main protagonist is not exempt from re-examining his own personal biases.
Meanwhile the writers of Tangled: the Series are too busy showing off how clever Rapunzel is to actually deal with the themes of injustice and bigotry that they added in themselves in the first place.
Rapunzel Knowing Attila Before Hand Weakens the Message
Tumblr media
In 12 Angry Men none of the jurors know the accuse. In fact, they can’t know him. It’s against the law. In order to have an impartial jury, no one can have any ties to either the defendant or the prosecution, and they must not have knowledge of the case or have had specific experiences that might cause them to be biased or unfair.
Rapunzel being Attila’s friend means that she already has her own bias and an invested interest in making sure Attila goes free. She’s not acting out of the simple goodness of her heart here. She’s doing something that directly benefits herself.
I don’t expect a children’s fantasy show to recreate the US judicial system with all of the complexities there in, but I do expect it to uphold it’s heroine as the selfless person it claims her to be. Yet the show constantly undermines this supposed character trait by only having her help the people she befriends, and only if that help doesn’t require anything emotionally challenging or mentally taxing from her.
How much more powerful would this episode be if Rapunzel was defending a stranger or someone she actively disliked? Imagine if it was Monty who was being accuse and Raps had to swallow her pride in order to do what is right. But that would require the show having Rapunzel actually learn something instead of placing her on a pedestal. It would also mean giving Monty a reason to exist rather than keeping him around to be a convenient red herring.
Rapunzel Shouldn’t Have to Prove Attila’s Innocence
Tumblr media
Rather than have a courtroom drama the show opts to have a ‘whodunit’ story instead. This unfortunately gives the implication that Corona’s judicial system runs on a ‘guilty until proven innocent’ mantra, which is backwards to any humane legal system. ‘Innocent until proven guilty’, ‘reasonable doubt’, ‘due process’, are the cornerstones of our modern social ethics.
In 12 Angry Men, we never find out if the accused actually committed the crime or not. That is because his actual innocence isn’t the point of the story. It’s about whether or not the system is working like it should or if it’s being compromised by human error.
Once again, I don’t expect a recreation of the US judicial system, but if you’re writing a story for a modern audience then you need to reinforce modern morals. Simply crouching Corona’s legal system as ‘of the times’ or ‘fantasy’ while ignoring why we no longer have such systems in place reduces the story to puerile fare.
It also means that show’s writers didn’t put enough thought into their world building.
No One Calls Out the Obviously Corrupt System
Tumblr media
The show has interwoven throughout its ongoing narrative themes of classism, injustice, abuse, and authoritarianism, but then fails to follow through on those themes by not having any of the protagonists actually examine any of these issues. They just sit there in the background, even as the show tries it darndest to present Rapunzel as an arbiter of reform. However a person can’t bring about change if they can’t even admit that there is a problem to begin with.
In this episode alone we have
Banishment is considered a reasonable punishment for an act of vandalism. A crime that is usually considered only a misdemeanor unless the damage goes over a certain amount. Keep in mind that not even most felonies would be given such a punishment in the real world
Introduces the prison barge that regularly carries away convicts. In the past ‘undesirables’ would be shipped off to prison colonies as a form of persecution. Attila and every other person we see subjected to Corona’s legal system are of a lower class.
Many prejudge Attila based off his appearance, lower class, and past upbringing. However, it is either Attila who is expected to change or Rapunzel who is expected to win people over. At no point is anyone told that they shouldn’t be prejudiced to begin with.
There is no judge, jury, or lawyers. The king alone decides the fate of criminals, the Captain is expected to be the both the prosecutor and the ‘executioner’, which is a conflict of interest, and the defendant has no one to represent them unless they so happen to know a kind statesperson. Meaning you have to be either rich or well connected in order to even have a chance to defend yourself.
Oh and there’s this...
Tumblr media
Uh, yeah you do. You’re the flipping king. You make the law. You’re the one to bring charges against Attila, and nearly every other criminal in the show, in the first place.
The show constantly wants us to view Frederic as simply an everyman who is only doing his job, but he’s not. He’s a ruler and as such he has powers and responsibilities that no one else has or ever will have. The series gives both him and Rapunzel all of the privileges of being in charge without holding them to account for the consequences of their actions.
By not pointing out how wrong these actions are, the show winds up avocating them instead. When I call Tangled the Series authoritarian, this is why. Because authority is never questioned even when clearly wrong and nepotism is presented as the solution to conflicts as oppose to being the problem itself.
The Show Introduces Complex Issues but Then Oversimplifies the Conflicts Surrounding Those Issues
Tumblr media
The creators of the show have constantly declared that the series is ‘not for kids’. That they were shooting for an older audience than the pre-school time slot they were given. Now ignoring the fact that Tangled was always going to have a built in audince of pre-teen girls and ignoring that children’s media can be mature, TTS lacks the nuance needed to viewed as anything other than a pantomime.
As stated before, this episode alone ignores the very real issues interlaced within the conflict in order to give us an overly simple mystery that anyone over the age of five could figure out.
It’s frustrating to watch the show constantly skirt towards the edge of complexity only to see it chicken out and go for the low hanging fruit instead. As a consequence the series winds up being for no one. Too shallow for adults and older teens, but too confused in its morals to be shown to small children and younger adolescents.
I wouldn’t recommend this show to a parent, not without encouraging them to view the series either before or alongside their child in order to counteract it’s ‘lessons’ and I know parents within the fandom itself who’ve stopped showing newer episodes to their kids; stating that they want their child to be old enough to point out the harmful messages to before doing so.
Once Again No One Learns Anything
Tumblr media
Rapunzel doesn’t learn that the system is flawed. Attila doesn’t learn to open up to people. Nobody learns to treat people with respect and to not judge others based on appearances alone.
The whole point of the episode is to just show off how much ‘better’ Rapunzel is than everyone else. The show constantly feels the need to tear down other characters in an effort to make its favs look good as opposed to just letting the mains grow as people.
Conclusion
Tangled the tv series is no 12 Angry Men. It’s no Steven Universe/Gravity Falls/Avatar:TLA/She-Ra/Gargoyles/Batman:TAS either. It barely reaches the same level as the likes of DnD, Sonic SATAM, or Voltron. Interesting ideas but poor pacing, build up, and lack of follow through, with some naff decisions thrown into the mix bring things down in quality. And unlike the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon from the early 80s, TTS lacks the benefit of being a pioneer in the field of animation, where such flaws are more forgivable.

The Return to Venus and What It Means for Earth
NASA logo. December 12, 2019
Image above: Venus hides a wealth of information that could help us better understand Earth and exoplanets. NASA's JPL is designing mission concepts to survive the planet's extreme temperatures and atmospheric pressure. This image is a composite of data from NASA's Magellan spacecraft and Pioneer Venus Orbiter. Image Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech. Sue Smrekar really wants to go back to Venus. In her office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, the planetary scientist displays a 30-year-old image of Venus' surface taken by the Magellan spacecraft, a reminder of how much time has passed since an American mission orbited the planet. The image reveals a hellish landscape: a young surface with more volcanoes than any other body in the solar system, gigantic rifts, towering mountain belts and temperatures hot enough to melt lead. Now superheated by greenhouse gases, Venus' climate was once more similar to Earth's, with a shallow ocean's worth of water. It may even have subduction zones like Earth, areas where the planet's crust sinks back into rock closer to the core of the planet. "Venus is like the control case for Earth," said Smrekar. "We believe they started out with the same composition, the same water and carbon dioxide. And they've gone down two completely different paths. So why? What are the key forces responsible for the differences?"
The Mysterious Planet
Video above: By studying this mysterious planet, scientists could learn a great deal more about exoplanets, as well as the past, present, and possible future of our own. This video unveils this world and calls on current and future scientists to explore its many features. Video Credit: Goddard Space Flight Center. Smrekar works with the Venus Exploration Analysis Group (VEXAG), a coalition of scientists and engineers investigating ways to revisit the planet that Magellan mapped so many decades ago. Though their approaches vary, the group agrees that Venus could tell us something vitally important about our planet: what happened to the superheated climate of our planetary twin, and what does it mean for life on Earth? Orbiters Venus isn't the closest planet to the Sun, but it is the hottest in our solar system. Between the intense heat (900 degrees Fahrenheit heat, or 480 degrees Celsius), the corrosive sulfuric clouds and a crushing atmosphere that is 90 times denser than Earth's, landing a spacecraft there is incredibly challenging. Of the nine Soviet probes that achieved the feat, none lasted longer than 127 minutes. From the relative safety of space, an orbiter could use radar and near-infrared spectroscopy to peer beneath the cloud layers, measure landscape changes over time, and determine whether or not the ground moves. It could look for indicators of past water as well as volcanic activity and other forces that may have shaped the planet. Smrekar, who is working on an orbiter proposal called VERITAS, doesn't think that Venus has plate tectonics the way Earth does. But she sees possible hints of subduction - what happens when two plates converge and one slides beneath the other. More data would help. "We know very little about the composition of the surface of Venus," she said. "We think that there are continents, like on Earth, which could have formed via past subduction. But we don't have the information to really say that."     The answers wouldn't only deepen our understanding of why Venus and Earth are now so different; they could narrow down the conditions scientists would need in order to find an Earth-like planet elsewhere.  Hot Air Balloons Orbiters aren't the only means of studying Venus from above. JPL engineers Attila Komjathy and Siddharth Krishnamoorthy imagine an armada of hot air balloons that ride the gale-force winds in the upper levels of the Venusian atmosphere, where the temperatures are close to Earth's.      "There is no commissioned mission for a balloon at Venus yet, but balloons are a great way to explore Venus because the atmosphere is so thick and the surface is so harsh," said Krishnamoorthy. "The balloon is like the sweet spot, where you're close enough to get a lot of important stuff out but you're also in a much more benign environment where your sensors can actually last long enough to give you something meaningful."
Image above: A team of JPL engineers tests whether a large balloon can measure earthquakes from the air. The team proposes to measure "venusqakes" from the temperate upper atmosphere of Venus, using an armada of balloons. Image Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech. The team would equip the balloons with seismometers sensitive enough to detect quakes on the planet below. On Earth, when the ground shakes, that motion ripples into the atmosphere as waves of infrasound (the opposite of ultrasound). Krishnamoorthy and Komjathy have demonstrated the technique is feasible using silver hot-air balloons, which measured weak signals above areas on Earth with tremors. And that's not even with the benefit of Venus's dense atmosphere, where the experiment would likely return even stronger results. "If the ground moves a little bit, it shakes the air a lot more on Venus than it does on Earth," Krishnamoorthy explained. To get that seismic data, though, a balloon mission would need to contend with Venus' hurricane-force winds. The ideal balloon, as determined by Venus Exploration Analysis Group, could control its movements in at least one direction. Krishnamoorthy and Komjathy's team hasn't gotten that far, but they have proposed a middle ground: having the balloons essentially ride the wind around the planet at a steady speed, sending their results back to an orbiter. It's a start. Landing Probes Among the many challenges facing a Venus lander are those Sun-blocking clouds: Without sunlight, solar-power would be severely limited. But the planet is too hot for other power sources to survive. "Temperature-wise, it's like being in your kitchen oven set to self-cleaning mode," said JPL engineer Jeff Hall, who has worked on balloon and lander prototypes for Venus. "There really is nowhere else like that surface environment in the solar system." By default, a landing mission's lifespan will be cut short by the spacecraft's electronics starting to fail after a few hours. Hall says the amount of power required to run a refrigerator capable of protecting a spacecraft would require more batteries than a lander could carry.  "There is no hope of refrigerating a lander to keep it cool," he added. "All you can do is slow down the rate at which is destroys itself."
Image above: Sue Smrekar, seen here at the 2018 media briefing before the landing of NASA's Mars InSight, is a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She believes exploring Venus will reveal important details about how rocky planets form and whether other planets are capable of supporting life.Image Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech. NASA is interested in developing "hot technology" that can survive days, or even weeks, in extreme environments. Although Hall's Venus lander concept didn't make it to the next stage of the approval process, it did lead to his current Venus-related work: a heat-resistant drilling and sampling system that could take Venusian soil samples for analysis. Hall works with Honeybee Robotics to develop the next-generation electric motors that power drills in extreme conditions, while JPL engineer Joe Melko designs the pneumatic sampling system. Together, they work with the prototypes in JPL's steel-walled Large Venus Test Chamber, which mimics the conditions of the planet right down to an atmosphere that's a suffocating 100% carbon dioxide. With each successful test, the teams bring humanity one step closer to pushing the boundaries of exploration on this most inhospitable planet. On August 31st 1947 the first EIFF, Edinburgh International  Festival opened.
The Film Festival we know today actually originated in 1947 as a festival of the documentary form, describing itself as the "First International Festival of Documentary Films".
The first films of the new festival were The Cumberland Story, The Seventh Age and The Festival of Youth, while Roberto Rossellini's Paisà, with its examination of the liberation of Italy during World War II, was screened at the festival's Closing Gala. The festival was opened by John Grierson, pioneering Scottish documentary maker and the first person to coin the term Documentary.
By the 50's the Festival had morphed into the entity we know today, chief amongst the filmmakers whose UK reputations the Festival helped establish was Ingmar Bergman, with premieres given over five consecutive Festivals between 1957 and 1961.
Ealing Studios classic and excellent film, The Man in the White Suit opened the 1951 Festival, while another legend, Orson Welles, delivered a sold-out two hour lecture on the power of cinema at 1953's Festival.
Hollywood legend Gene Kelly was in attendance at the 1956 Festival for the premiere of Invitation to the Dance, saying "I have always been a confirmed believer in the "Film Festival" as an incentive to higher standards of creative work, and anyone who has been to Edinburgh will tell you that every visitor leaves with the resolve to do better things."
With Peter Fonda's passing away last week I think it is right to mention Easy Rider. The classic road movie was intended for very limited release over here and its studio, Columbia Pictures, were none-too-happy when they found out that the Edinburgh International Film Festival planned to screen it in the 3000 seat Playhouse.
However, when a huge queue of Hell's Angels who had roared over from Fife appeared outside the venue for the premiere attended by Fonda they had a bit of a rethink!
Over the years, EIFF has welcomed a huge number of guests, including John Huston, Jacques Tati, Jennifer Lawrence, Tilda Swinton, Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, David Cronenberg, Cate Blanchett, Clint Eastwood and Sir Sean Connery.
The Festival has hosted UK premieres of Blade Runner, Alien, Back to the Future, Taxi Driver, Annie Hall, Withnail & I, The Usual Suspects, Amelie, The Hurt Locker and many, many more.
More up to date we saw other major films screened at the Festival in the 1990s they included Barton Fink and Boyz in The Hood in 1991, Strictly Ballroom in 1992, The Piano in 1993, Shallow Grave in 1994 and Terry Gilliam's amazing adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas in 1998.
Sylvain Chomet's The Illusionist opened the 2010 Film Festival, thrilling Edinburgh cinephiles in particular with its wonderful animations depicting the Scottish capital, as seen in the screenshots in the other two pics. Appearances by Patrick Stewart in 2010 and Bill Nighy in 2011 were followed by premieres for more great animated work, with Brave in 2012 and Finding Dory in 2016.
Now on earlier in the year, in June, this years EIFF showcased 121 new features, including 18 feature film World Premieres, 12 International Premieres, 8 European Premieres and 78 UK Premieres from many countries across the globe reaching 70,000 Festival-goers including 15,000 attendees enjoying the Festival's weekend of outdoor screenings, as part of Film Fest in the City with Edinburgh Live. More than 500 filmmakers were in attendance this year to support their films with over 800 press and industry delegates and 270 youth delegates also present.
The Edinburgh International Film Festival may not be the most prestigious or the biggest in the world, and is also overshadowed by our Festival Fringe, but it does have the distinction of being the longest continually running film festival in the world.

Underwater America with Peter Potamus (episode 25: Moxie Pond and Moosehead Lake, Maine)
Tumblr media
At any rate, as we open this particular episode, much can be said aerially of the view to be had along the New Hampshire-Maine border region, largely roughed-up granite mountains interspersed by the odd lake here and there, which can be said to also be the scene coming into the lake country of northern Maine (which even the selected stock music can’t manage to compromise) ...
PETER POTAMUS, in narrator mode: Wasn’t Lake Winnipesaukee quite the dive, especially the “giant’s staircase” underwater?
MILDEW WOLF, getting snarky as ever: You can say THAT again!
WALLY GATOR: And setting aside Weeki Wachee, you hardly see much of that back in Florida, don’t you know....
At any rate, we see the scene shifting to a campy-looking diner in Skowhegan, Maine, where, over coffee and pancakes in the classic Northern Maine stylee, discussion lies afoot--
PETER POTAMUS: Skowhegan, Maine--gateway to Moosehead Lake, one of northern Maine’s most popular resort areas ... and, in a way, Mt. Katahdin, itself a symbol of Maine in its own way. Not to mention the northern terminal of the Appalachian Trail ... but in a diner there, we discuss diving strategy:
Listening in on the breakfast and dive strategy session--
PETER POTAMUS: --as if Moosehead Lake wasn’t itself interesting, someone was mentioning to me about Moxie Pond, which we’ll dive first before heading to Moosehead!
MAGILLA GORILLA, somewhat ahead of himself: Is that where Moxie soda comes from? (Laughter all around)
PETER POTAMUS: In a way, Magilla--as in the name perhaps having come from there....
BREEZLY BRUIN: Might it be likely that we could have some Moxie while at Moxie Pond?
PETER POTAMUS: I think there might be a store on the way where we might pick up a case to enjoy on the side ...
WALLY GATOR: I’d be hard pressed to imagine us trying to drink Moxie in Moxie Pond just as those Weeki Wachee Mermaids were drinking RC Cola in the spring during their performance, don’t you know ...
MILDEW WOLF: Well, who wouldn’t?!
And so the drive up US 201 northward from Skowhegan towards Moxie Pond, stopping at the general store in The Forks, which could be considered the “gateway” to Moxie Pond ...
PETER POTAMUS, narrating: Moxie Pond, itself somewhat elongated, is reachable for the most part by way of a gravel road easterly from The Forks, whose general store managed to be a decent source of supply--including the inevitable elixir known as Moxie. Having it as part of a hot dog roast that evening--nothing but skin-on weiners of the sort Down Easters call “snappers,” as in the natural casing--we couldn’t help but notice how uniquely bitter was Moxie’s taste. Which, I will admit, was something of an experience ahead of the diving experience.
The action can be said to shift here to underwater, thanks to Squiddly Diddly’s rather amazing underwater camera work as much as kitschy background music inevitable to the series; we can assume a dive boat came into play.
For as unlikely a dive spot as Moxie Pond, whose average depth is about 12 feet (with a maximum such of 50 feet), such couldn’t be more refreshing on one of those muggy summer afternoons as seem to prevail in northern Maine, so long as mosquitoes and deerflies don’t get to you first!
We discern some especially interesting action off a spot about midway into Moxie Pond known as Burnt Jacket Island (how that name came about is anybody’s guess), finding much in the way of game fish such as would be common in northern Maine’s lakes region surrounding our intrepid divers ... not to mention a bit of hubris and debris from the logging era in those parts such as submerged logs from, say, a lumber raft as came apart for some reason to otherwise relieve the monotony of what could be lake grasses and sand. or maybe some granite “wall” coming out of the bottom from a modestly shallow lake as Moxie Pond inherently is. Oh, and amazingly clear, what with the lake not quite disturbed otherwise considering its isolation and obscurity.
Back at camp on shore ...
Considering all the mosquitoes and deerflies endemic, which can cause quite a problem at night, we took the precaution of stocking up on punk sticks to burn strategically around our campsite; the smoke from burning punk sticks is said to drive them away.
LOOPY De LOOP: Just like back in the wilds of Quebec during the summer months when the mosquitoes and the deerflies came out ... only we used a smouldering fire aimed at maximising the smoke output to keep such stingers at bay. Believe you me, you don’t want to get caught stung by a north woods mosquito at the wrong time; hence, the need for plenty of mosquito-confusing smoke in the summer months!
PETER POTAMUS, getting back to the narration: At least one thing was to be said for Moxie Pond: The night before we left for Moosehead Lake, we toasted her in--what else?--Moxie. (A chorus of “The Maine Stein Song” from Rudy Vallee could be heard in the background to maybe add a chintzy sort of atmosphere to the evening’s proceedings, even with punk-stick smoke to keep mosquitoes and deerflies at bay.)
The next morning, a hearty little campfire breakfast before proceeding on that gravel road leading us initially to Moxie Pond out from same ... and towards the main highway to Moosehead Lake, as in Maine 6/15 ... somehow, trying to dodge the tourist traffic was never going to be easy in the middle of a near-wilderness where the Northeast’s largest lake happens to be.... yet we find ourselves at a “hole in the wall” dive shop in Greenville Junction, practically on a side street and the sort where you need to be referred to ... and what stories could certainly be told, especially of the days when the pioneers on Moosehead Lake would basically use the ice-covered surface in the winters as a garbage dump, hoping the spring thaw would send the junk “in its place,” by and large.
The diving scene shifts now to one such especially fascinating underwater refuse dump site in Moosehead Lake from the past, presumably left over from an abandoned logging camp from back when the lumbering industry (which, as Loopy De Loop will be quick to admit, attracted plenty of French-Canadian types in the winter months) held sway. Not only cheesy music, but also plenty of empty bottles (liquor and otherwise), bedframes, bed springs, tables such as might have been from the dining hall--and even a substantial iron cookstove, looking none the worse for wear despite some algae, attracting especially the interest of Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har.
HOKEY WOLF, going into a mix of narrator and Sgt. Ernie Bilko: I would have to wonder if, in an earlier time, there could have been some easier way to move all that junk when the lumber camp was abandoned--but NOOOOO!! They just found it easier and more convenient to dump it all underwater, creating quite the potential for an Underwater Salvage Operation on an inland lake such as this!! And imagine the profit potential!!
PETER POTAMUS, as the action shifts to a chartered dive boat moving towards Mt. Kimeo on the north side of Moosehead Lake: Moving from the absurd to the sublime ... one of the boys in the dive shop back in Greenville Junction suggested diving what you’d call the “trunk” underwater of Mt. Kimeo, a rather substantial hill rising from the lake bottom ... which happens to be close to a somewhat down-at-heel resort hotel close by. Dropping anchor within view of the mountain, I mentioned in the pre-dive briefing about a granite “wall” on the underwater portion of Mt. Kimeo as might be worth checking out ...
And check out they did, as witness the dive into the waters off Mt. Kimeo, the flashlight action galore from the wetsuited dive team (yes, even Breezly Bruin is in black neoprene), and the sheer fascination of an underwater rock wall dropoff into the “steep and deep” of another remarkably clear lake for northern Maine’s resort country. Even the cheesiness of the stock background music doesn’t seem to distract one iota from the awe and wonderment of seeing the underwater side of a mountain. Not even Hardy Har-Har could appear fazed at such a sensation ... inevitably leading to--
At any rate, next week’s show is expected to be rather interesting. In fact, the whole’s premise is such that you’ll want to watch it for yourself to understand what it’s all about. So, till then, Peter Potamus winding things up ... and hoping you’ll enjoy the dive!
